Young Carers October Update

7th November 2016

October’s update from PKAVS Young Carers

I am still very happy to be coming along and meet with any interested parties to talk about young carers and the support we offer. It need only take 15 minutes but if it helps staff know the tell-tale signs for identifying young carers then this would be time well spent. Also if any organisations that are holding events and you would like us to attend please let me know.

If you’d like to know more about the young carers service then please visit PKAVS Carers Hub website ( ).

Alternatively if you would like to discuss the support available further please either contact me on 01738 567076 or at

YC Referrals and active YCs

In the month of October we received 10 new referrals, taking our total to 48 new referrals since April this year.  This total is still low, and I hope that there will be a steady increase over the coming months. Currently we are supporting 248 young carers at the service with a 144 files closed in the last year, due to change of situations, moving away from the area and non-engagement or becoming a Young Adult Carer (turned 16). Currently we are supporting 81 young carers on our RED level support (crisis point), 145 on our AMBER level support (moderate) and 22 on our Green level support (low). Whilst we are supporting 248 young carers, it is estimated that there could be as many as 1800 children in Perth & Kinross who have caring responsibilities. It is every agency’s responsibility to help identify and refer these hidden Young Carers, so please keep this in the forefront of your mind when working with the people you support.

Jasmin Watt, is now in post as our new schools Outreach Worker. Jasmin will be refocusing her role slightly to try and reach more 'hidden' young carers within an educational setting. We are also very happy to welcome our new Administrator Magdalena Turczynska, who will be supporting us two mornings a week.

Our staff continue to look for ways to support the delivery of our trips and residentials. In the last month 2 applications to small pot funders have been made. We also received a fantastic donation of £400 from the Aberfeldy Community Putting Green as part of the Perth and Kinross Wellbeing Fair. Thank you to you all for this and for having us along to your open day. This will be put towards supporting Young Carers in Aberfeldy and surrounding areas.
